Keeping notes as Markdown files in a folder

How Jotella saves notes to a folder as .md files: folder structure, images and use alongside other editors.

By default, Jotella stores notes in the browser's storage on this device. In Chrome, Edge and Opera, notes can instead be kept as plain Markdown files in a folder of your choice. That way, notes open in other editors, are backed up and stay in your own sync folder.

Connecting a folder

A folder is chosen with File › Connect to a folder…. Once it is connected:

  • Each note is an .md file. The file name is the note's title; when the title changes, the file name changes too.
  • Folders in Jotella become subfolders inside the chosen folder.
  • Deleted notes are moved to the ".Son silinenler" subfolder in the folder and can be restored for 30 days.

The browser may ask for permission to access the folder again the next time it opens; continue with Grant access. The connection is removed with File › Disconnect folder.

Images

Images are added with the Insert image button in the toolbar, from the Format menu, by pasting or by dragging. An image is not embedded in the note: it is kept as a separate file in the attachments subfolder of the folder, and only its relative link remains in the note. This way, the images also appear when the .md file is opened in other programs.

For notes stored in the browser, the images are also kept in the browser; when a folder is connected, they are copied along. Images from external addresses are not loaded; their descriptions are shown in their place.

Writing Markdown

Markdown shortcuts turn into formatting as you type: at the start of a line, "# " becomes a heading, "- " a bullet and "1. " a numbered list. A to-do item is added with Ctrl/⌘ ⇧ L. #tags in the text are listed in the sidebar.

In Safari and Firefox

These browsers cannot connect a folder; notes are stored in the browser's storage. A note is saved individually as an .md file with File › Export as Markdown… (Ctrl/⌘ S); .md and .txt files are brought in as notes with Import (.md, .txt)….

Good to know

  • Notes are not synced between devices. If the folder is your own sync service's folder, the files travel with that service.
  • There is no collaborative editing and no sharing link.

Jotella opens right away in the browser.
