Batch renaming photos by the date they were taken
How Nomaro renames the photos in a folder by EXIF date taken and a sequence number, with preview, conflict checks and undo.
Files from a camera or a phone often have names like IMG_4821.JPG. Nomaro renames these files by the date they were taken, for example as 2026-03-14_001.jpg. The files are processed on this device; neither the files nor their names are sent to a server.
Steps
- Select the photo folder with Open folder (Ctrl/⌘ O). If subfolders should be processed too, turn on the Subfolders option.
- From the Presets menu, choose Photos: date taken and number.
- In the Preview section, compare the CURRENT NAME and NEW NAME columns.
- Problems are marked in the preview, and those files are not renamed.
- Press the Rename button (Ctrl/⌘ Enter). The button shows the number of files that will change.
What does the preset do?
The preset consists of four rules, applied in order:
- Find and replace removes the old name entirely with a regular expression.
- Date uses Date taken (EXIF) as its source and writes it at the start of the name in the form 2026-03-14.
- Numbering adds a three-digit number at the end; the number starts again in each folder.
- Extension converts the extension to lowercase (.JPG → .jpg).
Each rule can be turned on or off and its order can be changed. The date format is changed in the Format field; for example, if a format with the time such as 20260314_094105 is chosen, photos taken on the same day are also distinguished by their time.
Points to note
- For files without a date taken, the modification date is used.
- Numbers are assigned in the order shown in the preview. The order can be changed with the Sort menu to name, modification date or size.
- If only certain files should be processed, a pattern such as
*.jpgis entered in the filter; files can also be included and excluded one by one. - The same name given to two files, names that already exist in the folder and characters that are invalid on Windows are marked.
Undo
Undo last rename (Ctrl/⌘ Z) returns the files to their old names. Undo is possible only for the last operation and only while the application is open.
Which browser?
In Chrome and Edge, files are renamed in place in the folder. In Safari, Firefox and phone browsers, the original files are not changed; copies with the new names are downloaded as a single file with Download as ZIP.
