Frequently asked questions
Is the archive uploaded to a server?
No. Opening, extracting, creating and converting take place within the browser, using a WebAssembly build of 7-Zip and zip.js.
Why can RAR files not be created?
The RAR decoding code is subject to the unRAR licence, which does not permit building a RAR-compatible compressor. A RAR archive can, however, be opened and converted to ZIP or 7Z.
Can password-protected archives be created?
Yes. ZIP and 7Z are encrypted with AES-256; in 7Z the file names are also hidden.
Are very large archives supported?
ZIP and single-file GZIP are streamed to disk, so large files are supported. 7Z, RAR and the TAR family are processed in memory and function reliably up to a few GB.
