Features
The contents of ZIP, 7Z, RAR, TAR, GZIP, ISO and CAB archives can be inspected, selected files or the entire archive extracted, and new archives created from folders and protected with AES-256. No data is uploaded.
Key features
- Content inspection
- Folder tree and search; size, packed size, ratio and date columns. The details panel shows format, method, encryption and unpacked size.
- Extraction
- All contents or a selection are extracted to a folder, with options for a subfolder named after the archive, preserving the folder structure, and overwriting. Double-clicking a single file prompts for a save location.
- Archive creation
- From files or folders: ZIP, 7Z, TAR, TAR.GZ, TAR.XZ, TAR.BZ2 or GZIP. Store, Fast, Normal and Best levels; estimated size, progress and cancellation.
- Passwords
- ZIP archives are created with AES-256, 7Z archives with AES-256 and encrypted file names. For opening, ZIP (AES and ZipCrypto) and password-protected 7Z and RAR are supported.
- Conversion
- An archive is converted to another format, for example RAR to ZIP or 7Z to TAR.GZ, without a temporary folder.
- Integrity test
- The CRC of every file is verified and any damaged files are listed.
- Format detection
- The format is detected from the content rather than the file name. Archives are opened via the file picker, drag and drop, "Open with", or the recent files list.
- Safe extraction
- Paths are sanitised: ".." and absolute paths cannot write outside the selected folder.
- Streaming
- ZIP reading/writing and single-file GZIP are streamed to disk; in Chrome and Edge, a new archive is written directly to the selected location.
- Background processing
- 7-Zip runs in a separate worker thread; the interface remains responsive and cancellation takes effect immediately.
- Context-dependent dropping
- A dropped archive is opened; any other dropped file starts a new archive.
- Desktop-specific functions
- In the desktop application: extraction next to the archive, "Show in Finder", dragging files from an archive into Finder (up to 512 MB), and a "Compress with Arkelo" Quick Action in Finder.
Operating system integration
Integrations provided by the desktop application. Desktop versions are listed on the Download page as they become available.
macOS
- Archives open by double-clicking or from the Open With menu
- Quick Actions: "Compress with Arkelo" and "Open with Arkelo"
- Files can be extracted by dragging them from the archive into Finder

- Context menu command: compressing the selected files and folders
- Compression via the Send to menu

Devices and browsers
- Opens in desktop, tablet and phone browsers; on narrow screens the layout is simplified.
- In Chrome, Edge and Opera, contents are extracted directly to the selected folder and new archives are streamed to the selected location.
- In Safari and Firefox, a single file is downloaded as is, multiple files are provided as one (uncompressed) ZIP, and new archives are saved as downloads.
