Frequently asked questions, known limitations and system requirements for Stellavo.

Frequently asked questions

Is my location sent anywhere?

No. The list of cities is built into the app; the location taken with "Use my location" is used only on this device, to calculate the sky.

How can a planet be told from a star?

Stars twinkle, planets do not; planets appear along the path of the Sun and the Moon, in the zodiac constellations. The "Planet or star?" lesson shows this in that night's sky.

Why was my photo not identified?

At least 10 stars must be visible. The phone's night mode or a steady 2–10 second exposure is enough; open the photo itself, not a screenshot. When Stellavo cannot identify a photo, it says why: too few stars, star trails or no match.

Does it work offline?

Yes. The star catalogue, the cities and the sky calculations are built in; Stellavo never goes online while it runs.

Known limitations

Functions not supported in the current version.

  • Stars go down to magnitude 6.5 (the naked-eye limit under a dark sky); deep-sky objects are limited to eight selected objects (Andromeda, the Pleiades, the Orion Nebula …).
  • Time is changed hour by hour and with a 24-hour slider; there is no date picker.
  • Comets, artificial satellites and meteors are not shown.
  • Photo identification needs at least 10 visible stars and a field of view between 12° and 100°; star trails, clouds and lights make it harder.
  • "Point at the sky" relies on the device's compass; the compass can drift, and the direction is corrected by dragging left or right.

System requirements
