Frequently asked questions

What does the scale target mean?

The total water the scale should show at the end of the step. During the pour time the expected value rises towards the target; when the amounts change, the targets scale with them.

The coffee came out sour or bitter; what should be changed?

After the brew, taste and strength are marked and Cafelo suggests what to try next time: for sour, a finer grind or hotter water; for bitter, a coarser grind or cooler water; and a ratio based on strength.

Does the timer stop when the screen locks?

Time is measured from the moment brewing started, so it stays accurate while the tab is in the background. The setting that keeps the screen on while brewing is on by default.

How are recipes moved to another device?

Known limitations

Functions not supported in the current version.

  • Cafelo does not connect to a scale; the scale target shows the weight the scale should read.
  • Suggestions follow general rules (sourness points to under-extraction, bitterness to over-extraction); every bean and grinder is different.
  • Coffee in the cup is an estimate: the water held by the grounds is subtracted with a general factor per method.
  • Days since roast and freshness are a general guide.
